More Unemployment

As most of you are aware, the recent strikes are due to the breach of contract between the public workers and the government, and how their pay and pensions will be worked out in the future. Like all contract breaches, we take the party who breached the contract to court and get what is due, however how can you take a government like ours to court?

More importantly these strikes of existing unemployment however unfair does not take away the fact that along with unfair proposals to the contract a further 710,000 people will be made redundant very soon. These are nurses, teachers and other vital government staff which will be dismissed.

However there was a slight glimmer of light when Nick Clegg (the backstabbing liberal) claimed that he would generate £1billion worth of jobs for the young. At this point you think "wow! Really? hey wait a minute whats the catch?"

So lets take a look at the catch....

- The three-year youth contract scheme will give employers subsidies worth £2,275 to take on 160,000 18-to 24-year-olds for six months. What happens after the 6 months? How can you be eligible for this?

- 250,000 young people will be offered work experience placements lasting up to eight weeks. These will be available to every unemployed 18-to 24-year-old who wants one and has been seeking work for three months or more. Is work experience not supposed to be free anyway... work experience is not the issue people face, why would an employer need to be paid to take on free workers? The problem is paid work is hard to find!

- A £50m programme for the 25,000 most disadvantaged 16-and 17-year-olds in England - those not in employment, education or training - to get them onto an apprenticeship or into work. Why is more spent on this when it is exactly the same as the top point? Why would the money be divided here? Most people who can not find jobs at this age are most disadvantaged!

- At least 20,000 additional incentive payments for firms in England to take on 16-to 24-year-olds in apprenticeships. Again is this not the same point as the one above? Why would people think they are two different things?

- More support for young people at job centres, such as extra time with advisers and a careers interview. I thought the job centre was supposed to do all those things anyway.

Without sounding too cynical this proposal sounds very confused and divided, and not aimed properly, and it is not even accepted yet and is planned to start in April. How can we even trust this will get to the right people when they do not even know who they are.

The main point I am trying to make about this whole thing is that the money used for this is not from original funding, it is from tax payers pockets again. SO even though you have paid your taxes another amount will be taken for this very confused and not very organised proposal. If we think about this carefully it will create a further class divide as people will be angry to pay more taxes blaming the youth and disadvantaged. So even after they come out of this scheme, they will continue to be marginalised and not employed as they were the so called cause of more tax... even though the government was the one who failed them and should really take the blame for this.

So lets think about this for a minute and see where this proposal will ultimately take British Society. ...

Youth Unemployment

I'm glad to surmise that media coverage on youth unemployment has been plenty. I fear that inevitably though, like all news cycles, something else scandalous will occur, causing this issue to be consigned to the bin (or at least recycling bin I hope). However, unless someone can tell me otherwise, I don't see the government doing much about it except for forcing us into unpaid employment with big chains stacking shelves. lest they cut us off from the whole £7 a day they give us (a one day travelcard for zones 1-2 is £8 a day).

  • Are they simply happy to cut jobs therefore leaving the nation's lives in the hands of the free market?
  • The same free market that caused millions to suffer in the first place?
  • Is it a wonder why so many simply hope to win the lottery
  • Is it laziness like the Conservatives maybe think it is or is it that having a pot of money is the only chance normal people have to get on in life?

We are taught that money is all that matters so of course we would crave the thing that we do not have. Not only that but we live in Great Britain, a developed nation, and yet we have to either a) a lot of money or b) a lot of debt, just to access the most basic things such as education and housing.

We must not lose sight of the fact that the young are important, not limited to the following reasons;
Who else is going to pay for the baby boomers' pensions?!
In an increasingly globalised world, if the young are unable to compete with the youth of other nations, Britain's economy will die a rapid death.
In the Arab world, 50% are under 18, with their burgeoning democracies hopefully on the horizon, this is a region with massive potential, so this is another group we will have to compete with and/or work with.

While many will have blamed the England riots on 'pure criminality' it would be absurd to deny that the youth are disenfranchised. If something is not done is it undeniable that this generation has the potential to cause even worse havoc than previously seen. Or if you really are economically unconvinced, perhaps this will convince you; if nothing is done, the youth will achieve absolutely nothing, thereby burdening the welfare system and our economy will never reach the potential that the free market always promised.

Wake Up Britain!

Throughout filming 18 and 19 year olds who are all students, to show what the real concerns of young people are, we have gained some insight. We were heartened by them but also alarmed. Heartened because higher education is so important to them and they just want to achieve the things their parents could not. They have relatively modest and fair ambitions; to make a better life for themselves and their parents. Alarmed because they do not seem to realise that having that coveted piece of paper i.e. an over-hyped English degree means nothing in reality. Hows that for 'real' terms? Let's go geek for a second and talk about real terms. Graduates in 2010 who graduated with the average debt of 22k can now pay (if they have a wage of a whole £15,000 a year, if they even have a job) £30 a month towards their debt. Not a princely sum right? No it's not but that £30 does not dent their debt one bit. Paying £30 a month for the next 25 years will leave them with still £22k of student debt. At the age of 46!! That's not even taking into account the treble of tuition fees next year and the upping of the interest rates.

They have been somewhat brainwashed into thinking that £20k+ of debt at the sprightly age of 21/22 is perfectly manageable and the norm. Well, the latter is true, but how did we get to the stage that a plethora of young graduates will be in this amount of debt as standard. OK it's the cheapest loan you'll ever get but what about the exorbitant costs that we must think about in the future; housing, a family etc. We are not going to be able to afford the most basic needs. What are going to be the results of the cost of housing and life in general in London? Over crowded housing and mass homelessness?

A degree can inhibit you from getting a job for fear of being over-qualified. A degree from a non-red brick university is worthless to massive corporations who actually give out the coveted real graduate jobs. Even a degree from a top 5 university can mean nothing if your name is foreign or you are, shock horror, working -class.

The young need to know the world is not their oyster! Unless Britain actually wakes up, stands up and makes a change to the system we have in place now, designed to keep the poor, poor and the rich, rich.

Watch our Preview

Below are two small snips from our documentary which is currently being filmed.

These two girls bravely came forward to share their story regarding their life in London and the constant struggle they face. Many aspects of their life may not be ideal, yet they stay positive, all the while statistics show that people like these are typical in the over million unemployed between 16-25.

We follow them and many other youths in different backgrounds and how government policies truly affect the future of our nation.

Watch the two links and comment.

RARA Productions

We want to highlight some issues that people may be going through within the UK and even some outside the UK... the main issue many young people are facing today is unemployment.

This is an issue that has been getting worse the last few months as many large and small companies start to downsize, which starts a vicious cycle of fear and more downsizing. The economy is sluggish, as growth is minimal or static, and as we enter the cold months, many people go without food and a place to stay.

Many young people who have invested large amounts of time and money in education, are now in a situation where an unskilled person also finds themselves. Everyone is suffering, from a company director who has been sacked to the cleaner who no longer can get work as their employ can no longer afford them. No one can see the light at the end of the tunnel just yet, making many people anxious and stressed.

We are not contributing to the fear and worry of the economy, we simply want to document it and find out what people are going through. How are they dealing with this situation and what measures are they taking, and if not, why? We would like to understand the struggle people are going through.

We want to hear from anyone who has suffered from the Recession.
